Fear not! You were made for These Times

Times of crisis call you to arise to be more of a hero than you ever  wanted to be!

Surprise – you’re our leader:

·      In both American and Korean versions of the TV series, “Designated Survivor,” an ordinary person reluctantly becomes the president of their country at a time of multiple crises.

·      In the movie “Patton”, George C. Scott quotes an ancient general saying of the critical battle about to occur “Woe unto them who will have to say:  I was not there.”

·      And in the great, poetic saga of the “Bhagavad Gita” Lord Krishna (disguised as a lowly chariot driver) counsels Prince Arjuna on the eve of a battle that the prince does not want to fight. Arjuna would rather avoid strife and striving. But Lord Krishna tells him: the  rightful” doer is one who acts free from self-seeking, humble, is resolute, steadfast, and content to do what is right .  Acting as a servant of the common good, will bring fulfilment.

Consider that at every moment in disturbing times, you have choices:

·      to complain that these times are foul and the players corrupt;   OR to face the fact that these times are hard, and the people need shelter.

·      to condemn the old ways as inadequate to the times; OR to arise and assert that these times call for you to invent new ways.

·      to criticize leaders for lacking integrity;   OR to commit yourself to follow honesty, transparency and  integrity – no matter what.

·      to grumble that you have no hope of success; OR like Prince Arjuna, to accept that “success” has never been in your hands.  Your part is to do the work that is needed.  You cannot guarantee results.  Results are in  the hands of destiny, of history, of the great mystery, the Great Spirit.  Just do your part.

You are well prepared to “be here, now.”

The Jungian counselor Clarissa Pinkola Estes, put it so well when she said:  “My friends, do not lose heart. We were made for these times.  I urge you not [to] spend your spirit dry by bewailing these difficult times. Especially do not lose hope. The fact is that we were made for these times. Yes. For years, we have been learning, practicing, been in training for and just waiting to meet on this exact plain of engagement.”

Summary:

You never know when history will call you to arise to be something more, something greater than you were expecting.  But when times become troubled, you always have choices. You can either wait for someone else to fix it; or realize that “we are the ones we’ve been waiting for.”  Fear not.  You are ready to be here, at this time, to help others.
